Senior investment operations positions have been a rare commodity in the Melbourne market over the last few years. This is primarily due to the regional centralisation of investment operations functions by various global fund managers such as AXA, Black Rock, Alliance Bernstein as well as ANZ Custody sale to JP Morgan (which then moved to Sydney and offshored numerous positions). In addition, fee pressure has forced many fund managers to outsource various investment operation functions to custodians and/or other service providers in the post GFC world.
Northern Trust, VFMC, Future Fund, Vanguard, AUI and some of the larger superannuation funds (Australian Super, CBUS, Hesta, UniSuper) have done a good job at absorbing the majority of professionals that unfortunately suffered a redundancy through these business restructures.
New opportunities are fast emerging in investment operations. We have observed that salaries are solid and premiums are being offered to particularly strong candidates. Opportunities in superannuation are becoming more prevalent and many funds management professionals are making the transition successfully. From an operational perspective the capabilities required are similar and with the internalisation of investments creating the need for larger operations teams.
