Leaders in Investment Management, Huey Miin Lim – Investment Manager, Fixed Income, Credit & Absolute Returns, CareSuper

Brief overview of your career to date.

I started out my career in investments in 2007 and have worked in a number of different investment organisations including investment consulting, funds management and superannuation. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to be exposed to an extensive range of asset classes and complex strategies. I became a CFA charterholder in 2012.

How did you get your first position in the industry?

After graduating from university, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join Artesian Capital Management. Working in the Investment Operations team of a boutique fund manager allowed me to work closely with many talented portfolio managers with a global focus that led to an understanding of the intricacies in the investment and portfolio management process and in complex trading strategies.

You recently moved to CareSuper in a newly created position to lead their Fixed Income Portfolio. Can you provide an overview of your current position at CareSuper? What do you do on a daily basis?

As an Investment Manager, I am responsible for CareSuper’s fixed interest, credit and absolute return portfolio. This includes portfolio strategy development, investment research, managers due diligence as well as the monitoring, review and implementation of the Fund’s investment program. As a senior member of the Investment team, I also contribute to discussions and strategic thinking of CareSuper’s broader portfolio.

You spent just under a decade at VFMC? What were some of the most important skills you learnt at this organisation?

The time I spent at VFMC was critical to my career development as I enjoyed working alongside many talented investment professionals and had many opportunities to develop my technical skills as well as my leadership skills. I joined the team at a time when VFMC was building its hedge fund and private credit portfolios. This was an exciting time of change which allowed me to jump into the deep end of my role and work alongside my team and with some of the top fund managers globally as we designed these portfolios. VFMC always strives to be at the forefront of investing, as such my role allowed me to build valuable knowledge and skills across both macro and micro thinking, and complex active strategies across a broad range of asset classes. VFMC also presented me a lot of opportunities to work with different individuals and asset classes across the organisation on various cross-function initiatives and projects which allowed me to build on my leadership skills and broaden my exposure beyond portfolio management.

During your career have you ever had a mentor? If so, how do you manage this relationship?

I have been very fortunate to have many mentors over the years, some within the organisations that I worked at and others from the broader industry. I have always found it useful to gain different perspectives on my career journey and appreciate the value that having mentors from different backgrounds brings to me.

What do you believe are the attributes that make a successful Investment professional?

Willingness to learn is a key one, never be afraid of putting your hand up to be involved in work outside of your role. Being prepared to take calculated risk and have confidence in backing your judgement. Leadership is also an important attribute and one that leads to a continuous learning journey, therefore be open to opportunities to work with different people.

If you could give one piece of advice about developing a career within Investment Management Industry what would it be?

While it is important to build technical knowledge and skills, it is also important to invest time and effort in building your leadership skills and professional networks regardless of where you are at in your career as well as thinking about how you can continue to challenge yourself to be better every day. It is also always good to consider various volunteer roles (e.g. CFA Society board) to share your knowledge within our industry.
